Daniel Shipman is generally credited as being Almonte’s first settler. He arrived in 1820 and held claim to most of the land within town boundaries on the south side of the Mississippi. That same year, he built a dwelling on this site, and a saw and grist mills in 1821 and 1822, respectively, across the way.
